Wake Me Up...

It has been such a dreary week! There has been little chance to get outside, do anything with the rest of the warm weather while it is raining all the time. Forecast for the rest of the week: more rain. :(

Lorelei turned one last week. Happy and sad all mixed. Unless God has other plans I'm not having any more children, so this was the last first year we'll go through. September 2008-2009 has been a crazy year for us, from buying a house, having a second child, chicken pox >.<, and all the everyday adventures. She's kept us stay sane (while making us a little more loony), and I wouldn't change a thing.
So now she's one, and things will change even more. She's a walking/falling, gibberish-spewing, banana-noming machine now, who with a flash of dimple and twinkle in her bright blue eyes can warm even the most curmudgeonly heart.
--SOAPBOX--
Why do people take perfectly cute babies, mix in a crocheted hat or headband, and dollop with a huge bow, oft times larger than the babies' heads? I don't understand! The overall effect is just hideous, and I keep coming across it everywhere! These oh-so fashion conscious people are pairing it with completely ugly petticoat/tutus. Foster care is the only answer. The only good thing about this trend is how strong the babies and toddlers neck muscles must be getting, from trying to keep their head from tipping over.--STEPPING OFF--
Seemingly every holiday and birthday that comes around is full of everyone asking me what to get for whomever and whatever. I usually end up telling just one or two things, which doesn't give the person asking much choice. I don't like that, peoples! So! I've had a kaboodle.com account for myself for a while now, and I've added a wish list for the girls and for Matt (though his is empty, and will be filled as soon as he deigns to tell let me know his wishes). You may peruse and buy for at your own discretion. I think you can reserve items, which will let everyone know that it is spoken for, and when they receive things it will let you know what they do and don't have. This isn't a 'you must get us something from this list!' command, but rather something to consider when you're out of ideas and about to press the call button. I'd LOVE if everyone else would do the same, so we wouldn't have to bother you and find out what you want :D. There's even a way to keep your lists private so that only specific people you invite can see them, or a way to keep them completely private, as an idea list for others. Kaboodle.com, sthrnbelle05 is my username.

  1. Well, coming from a mother of 2 little girls who often wear tutus and crocheted beanies with flowers, as well as being a photographer, I have to say I don't think it's hideous at all. It's a matter of preference. And from the number of tutus I've sold over the years and the number of successful photographers photographing these images, I'd say it's a popular preference. If you don't like it, by all means don't buy these things. My walls are adorned with photographs of my girls in bows, flowers and tutus and I've received a lot of photography business from people seeing these photos.

And just to let you know, you might want to consider removing that image from your post. That photographer's image is protected by copyright and it's illegal to use without her permission. I would highly offended, both as a mom and photographer, if anyone used one of my images, personal or professional, without my consent, especially if it was to be made fun of. That IS someones child.

  2. I apologize, Staci. I have no problem with beanies, flowers, or tutus, and I did cone across that way. I do adore your tutus, and aly usually begs to wear the ones you made for her once a week. My problem is with the flowers that are bigger than the kid's head, which I've never seen anyone who looks at this site adorning upon their child, and the petticoat tutus which usually envelope the kid's entire body. I apologize for any offense, as none was intended.

The picture was from etsy.com, which led me to believe it would be okay to share it, so I thank you for the advice on removing it.

  3. All is forgiven. I do agree with you about the extra large flowers and bows. I know many people love these. It was never my taste, though. I liked mine much simpler. It is, however, a very popular trend in photography.

But yes, for your own sake, do take the photo down. I have looked at probably a hundred professional photographers websites trying to gain inspiration and every single one states that their photos have copyrights and can not be used without their permission. You never know who might stumble across this photo and either know the photographer or recogize the baby! Sorry if I came across ugly. I was on board til the tutu part and I am biased toward tutus! LOL! The thing about using the photo was just some cautionary advise since I've learned some things about the business lately.

Hope Lorelei had a wonderful birthday! Olivia still looks so much like a baby compared to her for only being a couple of months younger.

  4. I meant "advice" not "advise". Wish my brain had spellcheck.

  5. Soo.. because it's popular, means it's a good thing?
    I got lost somewhere, clearly.

  6. Well, be prepared, I have a crocheted hat for Lorelei's birthday! Actually, it has no "big" flowers. I know what you were saying about the really big flowers. I have seen a few that were extremely big compared to the child. I also see that Staci may very well have to take pictures of that trend. You do what your customers want. Bethany, I was just looking at your Kaboodle list Sunday night, and was very glad to see a list for the girls, too. Love you all, Momma Carole/Grandma

  7. Ack! I honestly have no problem with crocheted hats, headbands, flowers, tutus, or any combination thereof (though a tutu hat might not be something to wear out of the house). :( There are even some crocheted hats and headbands on my wish list for the girls! I think there was a picture of Sofia in a beanie with a flower that was perfectly precious (yay alliteration), it's all about proportion. Baby has head 14 inches round, don't put a 20 inch diameter flower on top. And the Kaiya Eve/Oopsy Daisy pettiskirts just aren't for me. I should learn to keep my soapboxes to myself :(
